Artist’s Statement
I look at the world a lot. A small part of it, at least.
I used to keep art largely indoors, with interiors and still lives being the staple of my activity. There was always some - a little - landscape: city stuff mostly, because I lived in London for many years, grew up there indeed. Since moving to Sussex activity has gone outdoors a lot, although bigger and more complicated work goes on in my painting room, informed by studies in watercolour, drawings, sketchbooks. London still makes an appearance from time to time.
A certain amount of time spent in Italy conditioned the way I see, made me want to take notice not only of the glories of light and matter, but also of the effect of history, the past, on how we see the present.
I want to remember somehow, in what I do, Piranesi's Rome or some of the late Renaissance artists or... whomever. I know this is not obvious to anyone looking at my work - especially as I do not paint figures anymore (although I used to, a lot).
