Artist’s Statement
'Canal builders' is from a small series of monochromatic canvases that I completed that were inspired by photographs depicting the history of Manchester. The painting shows both the men and children in a staged shot as the building of the famous canal network around the North West of England is recorded. These canals would provide the area with the opportunity to provide the world with goods such as cotton, paper, soaps and a range of subsidiary goods.
